Life is passing by...

A week from now will be my last day of being 25. I'm celebrating that milestone by job hunting like crazy thanks to my former place of employment closing down. The mister keeps asking me what I want to do for the big day, and I really am not in a celebratory mode this year. Not because I'm getting a year older, but because life seems rather uncertain thanks to the current unemployment.

I did get a new laptop for my birthday from good ole dadder. While new brakes/rotors probably would have been the better present, I'll try to get those in January when my refund check comes in. Besides, I've had a sloooooooow computer for almost as long as I've had a computer, and now I'm not sharing with the mister anymore.

Yes, I know I don't write often, but that doesn't mean I don't read.

Yes, as the title states, I don't write in here often enough. I blame this on the fact that I have about 30 blogs that I follow, and that I like knowing more than I like writing. So, as an update...

My Bengals beat the Steelers IN CINCINNATI yesterday, thereby gaining some street cred from ESPN and various other sources who have decided that Cincy may in fact be real this year.

School is going well, I have studied more per week than I ever did in undergrad and I've got solid A's in everything. Not that I didn't have good grades back then, but there was a distinct lack of effort in obtaining them.

The roof over my and Josh's head continues to leak horrendously after every massive or minor storm that rolls through Bville. We went to Cbus for a Crew game Saturday, and had to leave 10 gallon pots, trash cans and other cooking paraphernalia scattered around the place. Our return meant a lovely mildewy smell that had to be eradicated with clorox disinfecting spray and extremely cold a/c. Not pleased with the landlord or the people who fixed the roof a month ago.

Marshall has turned into an almost good football team. Technically they are great, with several players ranked in the top 20 in various stats, and a winning record of 3-1. However, the citizens of Htown are straining at the bit, ready to devour Coach Snyder as soon as the moment presents itself, so it's not known if he'll make it through the season in one piece. Time will tell.

Other than that, it's been relatively low key in Bville. Thus, my reading more than posting.

I am so excited, and Miss West Virginia's pageant is on tv and absolutely looks amazing, I wish Ohio could take a couple notes off this one...should be getting ready for a wedding, but I'm watching this instead.

Night 1 summation

Interesting results for tonight. While the talent winner was not a surprise, as she was one of the few who could realistically be seen performing at Miss America, I do have to say I am still mystified with the swimsuit winner. While, I am not in the fighting shape that I used to be in, thanks to 20 years of sports, I can tell healthy, fit bodies when I see them. Especially the coordinated ones. This winner simply was not at her best, which overshadowed a contestant from the southern end of the state. Not that I don't like the girl, I have had her as a favorite from pictures for awhile, but I just wasn't impressed. For a local pageant, yes she was a SS winner....not for a state pageant.

Overall, interesting filler presentations by the MOA pageant. I just wish that singers would be a little more on their key when they sang.

Here's to tomorrow night....

the service industry

It's rather frustrating being a waitress.
Yes, I know it's a minimum wage job and that if I need to make lots of money I should go to college to get one of those jobs. Hi, I have a bachelors degree, one-third of a masters and am working on an associates as we speak. I get it.
But where I work is most likely the frustrating part of being a waitress. Not the interaction with people, bussing tables and dealing with food orders. It's the 1000 other parts of my job that you wouldn't normally have at a typical "chain" restaurant that are finally putting me on edge.

For instance, my diner has the local city jail food contract. We supply lunch and dinner to the inmates seven days a week. However, due to the fact that our catering business is really what keeps us afloat, I get stuck taking jail food 2-4 times a week during my shift. While this may seem like a small matter, I am normally the only waitress during my shift. I work mornings, which means I also prep the front for high school lunch, as well as man the entire front of house by myself. Adding in the 15-20 minutes that it can take to pack up all the meals, drive to the jail, deliver and then return...and it can get rather frustrating, even more so when you have customers that don't like losing a waitress for half of their meal.

There are two restaurants/bar and grills downtown and they are both next to each other. Our main competition has a liquor license, as well as being a sports bar, so they get the primary focus when folks swing through downtown. We are more of a "family" establishment, with focus on the oldies era of music/diner and bakery...so our crowds are not as high. Therefore, my daily take is about a quarter to a third of what a typical waitstaff person would make at a place such as Bob Evans, Applebee's, Chili's and the like. This can get terribly maddening, especially on days like today, where I made ten dollars on a six hour shift. As opposed to yesterday, where I made the second most I've ever pulled, $64.01 on the same shift.

I think the fact that I make less that standard minimum wage, plus the added stresses of working in a small restaurant and all the hassles that come with that place are finally starting to get to me. I really need a new place, and am eagerly hoping that Bob's does call back...because I don't want money to become a problem. Thankfully when I move this summer, I should have better luck in Htown.

Finally writing again....

After a rather extended break from my old computer, I felt it was time to make a new blog. Considering how my computer currently sits in a box in another room, and has done so since early February, it's time to write again.

There's been many changes in my life in the past three months. I moved in with my boyfriend..and his grandma...and his dad...and the three doggies...a definite twist! I'm living not in Ohio anymore, but in its southern neighbor. I'm in the process of transferring down to Marshall to complete these last two years of school--and possibly get done with being a student before I hit the decade mark!

Other than that, it's Opening Day for my Reds, and only 5 more months until the Bengals suit up to play...
